About Contemporary Cuban Art

About Cuban Art

The avant-garde Cuban art is characterized by different phases leading to the formation of contemporary Cuban art.

BONA002 From the first decades of the 20th century until now, we find artists who were influenced by European trends and are developing an indigenous and original way to express themselves in their work. For example: Víctor Manuel, Fidelio Ponce de León, Wilfredo Lam, Amelia Peláez , Carlos Enríquez , Raúl Martínez , Mariano Rodríguez, René Portocarrero, Antonia Eiriz, Servando Cabrera etc. The triumph of the Cuban Revolution as an emergent social process was a turning point of their ideological, aesthetical, and thematic questioning.

LOLO002 After 1959, the victory of the Cuban Revolution brought about a change not only in the artist’s aesthetic and subject conception, but in the creation of Art Schools and the beginning of a great creative process in visual arts. They reveal the time and revolutionary transformations and have special characteristics such as Abstractionism, Expressionism, Photorealism, Pop Art, among others.

The following generations of Cuban visual artists (from the 80´s until now), show an astounding and controversial work from every point of view: sociological, documentary, thematic, academic, etc..

Inspired by Caribbean sunlight and with a palette of bright and warm colors, ArtéSol Gallery takes us on a journey with the most representative Cuban contemporary artists on the international art market.
